Australia Day And The Opening Of The Australian Film Festival In Guangzhou

AustCham Board members, Ian Jones and Frank Caruso, attended the Australia Day celebration and the launch of the Australian Film Festival at the Ritz Carlton in Guangzhou on Jan. 26th.  The evening was hosted by the outgoing Australian Consul-General to Guangzhou, Mr. Sean Kelly, and his wife Hong plus the President of the Kingold Group, Dr. Zhou Zerong.

After a pleasant red carpet welcome and a cocktail party, the 300 guests were treated to a fine dinner of Australian produce complemented by premium wines from Margaret River, McLaren Vale and Barossa Valley vineyards.  Mr. Kelly gave his Australia Day farewell speech and highlighted the growth of the Consulate over the last three years in terms of fostering new bilateral business deals, cultural exchanges and the further strengthening of the ties between Australia and China. Mr. Grant Dooley has now succeeded Mr. Kelly in the Consul General role.

Iconic Australian actor Bryan Brown returned to Guangzhou after a 24 year absence to open the 2010 Kingold Australian Film Festival (AFF).  He spoke of the amazing differences he saw on his drive to Guangzhou earlier that day; he remembered the city fondly from his 1986 visit for the making of the film Tai Pan.  The AFF runs from January 29th to February 7th and highlights eight recent Australian films including Kenny, Dirty Deeds*, Kokoda, Australia*, Ten Canoes and The Dish.  (* starring Bryan Brown).
