SACS Sichaun Eco Journey March 21-25, 2010

Sichuan is one of the most scenic and interesting areas of China. The landscape is said to leave one breathless as the sheer beauty of the lakes and the vibrancy of the colors defy description.

Day One: Our exclusive tour will depart from Shenzhen (8:40am) and fly (via Chengdu) to the UNESCO World Heritage area of Jiuzhaigou (lit. Nine Stockade Gullies). This area is known for crystal clear lakes, lush forests and countless waterfalls. Over 140 species of birds and many endangered animals call this area home. One and a half days of the tour is set aside for exploring this beautiful park.

Overnight: Jiuzhaigou’s Xing Yu hotel (2Nights).

On day three the journey will continue with a short flight to Chengdu, Sichuan’s quirky capital city. The people are lively, the food is spicy and you are sure to be captivated by this energetic city. A visit will be made to Wenshu Temple, the largest Buddhist Temple in Chengdu which was built during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). We will also spend time in a Teahouse to enjoy the lively atmosphere and enjoy traditional folk music. A true slice of Sichuan life!  Late this afternoon a cooking class will reveal the secrets to Sichuan’s cuisine at a good restaurant.

Day Four: Following breakfast, we will go to BiFengXia Panda Breeding Base; home to over 30 giant pandas. A local expert will offer a guided tour of the facilities. You will have plenty of time to spend with these amazing creatures. Lunch will be served in a family guesthouse.

In the evening a performance of the famed Sichuan Opera is sure to delight and amaze with its spectacular face changing and acrobatic skills. It is said that ancient people first painted their faces to drive away wild animal. Sichuan Opera absorbs this skill and perfects it into an art. Overnight: Flower Hotel (2Nights).

Day Five will take us to the Panda Research Center to learn more about the Panda’s habitat, mating habits, diet, intelligence and how they have survived despite increasing natural and human threats to their existence. That afternoon, we will visit Chengdu’s Jinsha Ruins Museum. This world class museum exhibits the splendid culture of the ancient Shu Kingdom 3,000 years ago, modifying previous assumptions about the origins of the Chinese civilization. Over 6,000 pieces of cultural relics reveal sophisticated craftsmanship with carved jade, gold, bronze, stone and ivory artifacts. This evening we will return to Shenzhen arriving back at 8:05 pm.

Cost:  6,435 RMB per person based on twin share, Single Supplement 780 RMB, 5% discount available for SACS Members. Children (between 4 and 12 years) are 50% of the adult fare if NO extra bed is needed. 75% if extra bed is required.
