Reminder of an AustCham Shanghai Women’s Day Event: Successful Business Women Share Their Stories

As part of International Women’s Day on March 8th AustCham Shanghai is proud to present a panel discussion and luncheon highlighting the remarkable achievements of business women in Asia.

The panelists will discuss a number of topics including: running a business in China, dealing with international and inter-cultural relations, challenges, achievements and maintaining work life style balance.

The Panel

Ms Lyndall Sachs
Commissioner General for Australia and Executive Director Shanghai World Expo 2010

Ms Sachs is a senior staff member of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and prior to her appointment as Commissioner General was Ambassador to Lebanon and Assistant Secretary, Parliamentary and Media Branch and departmental Senior Spokesperson, a position she held since 2004. Prior to this she was Director of Media Liaison Section (2001-04).

Before joining DFAT in 2001, Ms Sachs worked for the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), London, as Public Advocacy Officer and Senior Media Spokesperson (1997-2001). She has also held the positions of Refugee Initiatives Manager, Marie Stopes International (1996-97), and UNHCR Senior Public Information Officer in London (1994-95), Goma (formerly Zaire) (1994) and Belgrade (1991-94).

Christine Ip
CEO China, ANZ

Christine joined ANZ in 2009 with 22 years banking experience, most recently as Country Head, Consumer Banking, China at Standard Chartered Bank. Christine has held a range of senior management positions in product and sales management, customer segment management and risk management in Hong Kong, the United States, Canada, Singapore and China with Standard Chartered Bank and HSBC.

Christine has significant experience in China – leading Standard Chartered Bank to local incorporation in China, developing a leading franchise in SME banking, establishing onshore private banking, and launching a consumer lending and debit card business. Her achievements have been recognised in a number of awards including the Asian Banker magazine award for ‘Best International Retail Banker’ in 2008.

Pattie Walsh
Partner and Head of DLA Piper’s Asia Employment, Pensions and Benefits Practice

Pattie has been a dedicated employment law expert since 1992, having practised as both a barrister and a solicitor in England before becoming admitted as a solicitor in Hong Kong in 1996. She holds an LLM in Employment Law and Industrial Relations. PRC labour law issues have been a primary focus for Pattie and her team. Just prior to joining DLA Piper, Pattie’s China team at her previous firm was voted Asian-Counsel’s China Employment Team of the year 2009-2010. At DLA Piper, Pattie continues to lead an experienced team of dedicated China labour law specialists.

Pattie is recognised as a “Leading” employment lawyer in the Asia Pacific Legal 500 and Chambers Asia, and she is also listed as an expert in the Guide to the World’s Leading Labour and Employment Lawyers. Pattie was named in the ‘Asian Legal Business’ Hot 100: The hottest lawyers of 2009 and quoted as being “widely regarded as one of the best, if not the best, employment law practitioners in the region.” Her team was awarded ‘Best Law Firm in Hong Kong for Employment Law’ by Corporate INTL Legal Award in 2009.

The Moderator
Lei Cheng is CNBC’s China correspondent reporting from Shanghai. She also works on shows for ICS and CBN (China Business Network) channels. She was one of CNBC’s stock watchers reporting from Singapore.

Lei started her career in finance and worked for five years with Cadbury Schweppes, then ExxonMobil in Melbourne, Australia. She is a Certified Practicing Accountant.

Lei obtained her Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Queensland, Australia. She is an accredited translator between Chinese and English. Lei was born in China but became an Australian citizen.
