Shenzhen Tong in Taxis

The other day on the way to work, I was talking to the taxi driver after discovering that he had a Shenzhen Tong reader on the dashboard.

He was telling me that only 1 company is using them as a trial for a few months. He also told me there are mixed reactions amongst taxi drivers. Most are welcoming it as they do not have to carry as much change anymore, but some ( I presume the ones who are trying to claim less income) say that it is inconvenient and troublesome.

The first driver I met willingly accepted my card and said thank you and good bye. However, a few days later, I met a second cab using the reader. At the end of the ride, I passed him my card and he made some lame excuse that, “oh oh I have to turn the reader on.”

I said, “Its already on,” to which he replied, “No, no, no, I mean that if you want to use the reader you have to tell me before we start the meter,” and so I said “FINE” and paid the fare.

All in all, I think it’s a great idea to have these readers. Less cash is always a good thing. I have noticed some smaller, local one stop shops that are now starting to use these readers.
