Word from an Expert Post-’80s Generation in China : Little Emperors or Big Explorers?
Who are the Post-80′s and why should we care about them? Much has been written about this generation in China and around the world. More commonly known as Generation Y; they have been labeled self-centered and materialistic, but also tech-savvy and open-minded. While identifying the key characteristics of this group is important, more crucial still is the need to understand the implications. As an insights-led furniture and service provider, Steelcase Inc. makes it a priority to understand its customers’ needs. Since the Post-’80s represent the future of the workplace in China, we set out to discover what makes this generation tick and what that might mean for us and our customers.
Technology has enabled the Post-’80s generation to become connected to the world in a way that was unimaginable to previous generations. China now ranks as the country with the highest mobile phone use, and users access the internet more often from their phones than from computers. Where they differ from their global peers, however, is in the underlying influence of Chinese culture. Culture plays a huge role in determining the values of any generation anywhere in the world, and China is no different.
In this presentation, we will discuss our research methods, share our findings about some of the key shifts due to the influence of the Post-’80s generation, and suggest how employers might develop solutions to address them.
