The city government has discovered a widespread scam in which green taxi drivers overcharge passengers with an electronic device.

Dubbed the bomb where it can send a pulse to remotely control taximeters. Bought from electronics shops in Huaqiangbei. By activating the “bomb,” drivers can keep charging at a speed of 130 km per hour, thus increasing taxi fares, government officials said. Most “bombs” are hidden under the carpet or in the cover of the gear lever. This way, passengers would be unaware of the device’s presence.

In a two-hour operation launched last wednesday afternoon, the municipal traffic commission caught one taxi fitted with a “bomb”.  The driver, said he had no idea about the device. The taxi belonged to the Baoluhua Taxi Company. Vice director general Yu Li of the passenger transport bureau, said: “Adapting taximeters is against the law. It is unfair to passengers and will impose a very bad image on the taxi industry.”

Yu said only few drivers even knew that altering meters was a crime. Any drivers caught using these meters will be automatically fired, and the taxi company will be punished, Green taxis operating in Longgang and Bao’an districts charges lower fares than red taxis operating in Nashan and Yatian districts. Some drivers say they adapt the meters because they can’t earn enouhg money.

The municipal traffic commission said in the past taxi meters had same codes, so once deciphered it can be altered. Starting from yesterday the commision will start giving codes to every new taxi meter that will be installed in taxis.

Members of the public are welcome to lodge complaints on the overcharges given by drivers of this taxis with the traffic commission hotline on 8322-8000.

  1. I am an American tourist. In early May, I came out of the Lo Wu custom area. I asked the uniformed guy where the taxi is. A man in his late thirties immediately came over and helped me with the luggage, supposedly to get to the taxi area. We went to the garage and a car came. He said his business associate would drive me. He put my luggage in the trunk. He then said the fuel is expensive and said he needed to charge me 500 rmb to get to my hotel next to the culture village. He even gave me receipts which he said I could check through the internet. I found out later from the hotel that the charge should have been 100 rmb or no more than 150 rmb. BE CAREFUL!!!
