What Do Australians Living Overseas Need to Do for Australian Federal Election 2010?
The Australian Consulate has been contacting Australian citizens to update them on the Federal Election 2010. Australians should register online at www.smarttraveller.gov.au so that they can be contacted in an emergency or with information about important events, such as elections. With the next election scheduled for Saturday, 21 August 2010 there is a short timeframe to examine the options available to you. Some deadlines for new enrolments have already passed.
If you are outside Australia on Election Day, you will not be fined if you do not vote. You are however required to notify the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) before the election date that you are not in Australia. For further information refer to www.aec.gov.au. A useful Frequently Asked Questions for voting overseas section is also available.
If you are enrolled, and have not sought an exemption, you may vote in the federal election in one of two ways, by visiting the Australian Consulate General in person at Level 22 – CITIC Square, 1168 Nanjing West Road, Shanghai or by applying for a postal vote at www.aec.gov.au
