Another foreign delegate was impressed on the changes Shenzhen made in the past three decades. Former Japanese Prime Minister Toshiki Kaifu saw how Shenzhen develop into a modern economic structure. Shenzhen offers valuable experience for the city through its development.

Kaifu said that Shenzhen was nothing but a big construction site with lots of undeveloped land, few small sheds no offices, warehouses or even parking lots. Kaifu was awarded with the title of honorary citizen of Shenzhen for his numerous contributions in many places around the city, including Shenzhen University where he planted the banyan tree as a symbol of the friendship he had with the university were he was a professor.

Kaifu hopes Shenzhen will achieve greater accomplishments after its 30th anniversary.
