Government to partially shoulder insurance for students
An annual premium of 15 yuan will be shared equally by the city government and the Shenzhen Education Development Fund plus the students in an effort to promote accident insurance for school students. Students covered by the insurance can receive a maximum of 100,000 yuan as compensation for death or disability. And a maximum of 10,000 yuan for medical expenses.
Insurance is not compulsory to students, and students who chose not to contribute will remain uninsured. Government will pay for the premium for students of poor families holding Shenzhen hukou. The city will start providing accident insurance for students in 1996 but stopped last 2006 when the government started buying school liability insurance.
Under the scheme the education bureau will pay an annual premium of five yuan for each student, and will shell out a maximum of 300,000 yuan if the insured student gets injured in school. Plus the school will pay a maximum of 5 million yuan as compensation for the accident.
