SIM card registration implemented by MIIT
A new policy took effect yesterday requiring all mobile phone users to register or provide their personal information upon purchasing SIM cards. The government says the move is necessary in order to protect user privacy and curb spam SMS messaging.
Anyone purchasing SIM cards from China Telecom, China Mobile, and China Unicom will be ask to provide their full names and identity card numbers upon purchase. Foreign nationals will also be required to show their passports or any identification when they purchase any SIM cards. Convenience stores and street vendors are ordered to suspend their sales until they are trained to registered anymore that will buy SIM cards from their stores. Existing SIM card owners are also ask to provide their personal details when they update their services from network providers. Since these providers have confidentiality system that will protect their customers personal information.
The registration system is a nationwide move organized by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and will be introduced in two phases, new users are registered when they purchase and old users registration will be completed in three years time.
