Security on high alert during 60th anniversary parade
Due to the number of foreign nationals and High ranking Government officials Beijing was in heighten security as police blocked off Tian’anmen square, the Forbidden City and other popular landmarks in preparation of a massive parade that will mark the 60th anniversary of New China.
The Forbidden City and Great Hall of the People, along with hotels, restaurants, shops and other businesses along Chang’an Avenue were ordered closed in preparation of the event ahead of them. Helmeted armed police were found everywhere standing besides armored vehicles at intersections, subway riders were subjected to metal detectors and bag scans before allowed to take their rides. Some subway stations in the vicinity of Tian’anmen Square were closed early today.
A thick fog hovering over the city might stopped the planned jet flyovers and fireworks display, but the Beijing Meteorological Station have 18 planes on standby to do cloud seeding to induce rain showers if it necessary. Police advised residents not to travel within the city and just watch event in their home since it will be televised.
