Australian Consul General to host Melbourne Cup Luncheon
To mark the 150th anniversary of the Melbourne Cup, the Australian Consul General to Guangzhou, Mr. Grant Dooley, in partnership with the Australian Chamber of Commerce -South China, the Australia China Alumni Association (South China Branch), Aussie Sheilas, the Guangzhou Scorpions and Wallaby Teds will be hosting a formal Melbourne Cup luncheon on Tuesday, November 2, 2010, 11:00 a.m.
Known by the Australians as “The Race that Stops a Nation”, the Melbourne Cup is Australia’s most important horse race. Australians all over the world stop wherever they are to watch and cheer as their favorite horse races for the finish line.
The race is held over a distance of 3,200 metres for horses three years and older. It is the richest and most prestigious ‘two mile’ handicap in the world. The Melbourne Cup Trophy, a stunning 18-carat gold trophy valued at $125,000 is one of the most identifiable sporting trophies anywhere in the world. It is a national icon embedded in Australia’s cultural fabric. Off the track, stylish Melbourne Cup hats and headpieces have been a major feature of Melbourne Cup Day for decades. Spectators, punters and thousands of other racing enthusiasts are drawn to this premier event, donning their very best outfits for a truly excellent day of racing and entertainment. Every first Tuesday of November is marked for the Melbourne Cup and Melbourne Cup history has spanned centuries since its first gallop in 1861.
So bring out your best suit, find a fabulous frock, add a glamorous hat and come along to join in the fun! The race will be televised during the event and there will be sweepstakes, special prizes and competitions for the best-dressed on the day.
Tickets will be available for sale on 20th October. Places will be limited, so make sure you mark your diaries and get in early!
