Phone software making charges without users knowledgeMobile users in Shenzhen that are using bootlegged models are complaining of swelling phone charges for services they are not using and charges for services that they haven’t consented to.

Behind this bogus charges is a software called SP, that have been installed in the phones and can be programmed to automatically dial phone numbers or send out text messages without the knowledge of the users. According to mobile phone providers some of these services incur the fees when its confirmed by the users while other services doesn’t need any confirmation. Its theft says one mobile user, its a conspiracy between phone makers and software suppliers to make money out of its users. Phone retailers said that some of these knock offs phones have installed pre paid access to some of the services ranging from web browsing to online games, that incur the charges even without the knowledge of the phone users.

The SP software was tied in with phone application software, these application software is needed in order for phones to function properly, so they have to give in software suppliers when they demanded that the SP software must be installed. Generally the software only charge small amounts a month so users won’t notice.

The Shenzhen Consumer Council said its illegal to charge users for services without consent or knowledge, however the council admitted its hard to identify who or what was activating these paid services.
