Apple products users to be taxed when crossing borders
Mainland customs decided to step up their battle to crackdown smuggling of Apple devices, bringing in large quantities of electronic goods has always been banned or taxed heavily. Anyone bringing an iPhone or iPad will be charged with tax duty. It’s has been a common misconception that if you declare the item you’re carrying for self use, you can get a tax exemption. iPhones and iPads are two of 20 products that are excluded from tax exemption. Users need to make a declaration and pay the corresponding taxes.
Beijing General Administration of Customs issued directives clarifying the regulations what visitors and residents can bring inside the country without paying taxes. Residents can bring purchases valued up to 5,000 yuan tax free, while visitors and tourists are only allowed 2,000 yuan. Apple products was not directly mentioned in the new ruling, but its aimed to control smuggling of iPhones and iPads into the mainland. These products are in short supply in the mainland and priced higher, that is why customs officials noticed a lot of people carrying boxed iPhones and iPads across the borders.
With a huge number of traffic at the border its difficult for officials to check every passengers bringing in Apple products, still many are not aware of the new ruling and many of them didn’t have any problems crossing the border carrying iPhones or iPads.
