Electric buses to be introduced by the end of the year
20 electric buses will go on service operated by the Shenzhen Bus Group by the end of 2010. This buses will be the city’s first line of green energy buses, then 250 more green energy buses will be added by the company. This move is hailed as a step in making Shenzhen into a low carbon city.
Shenzhen was also the first Chinese city to launch an all electric taxi when it purchased 30 BYD battery powered cars. The government hope that its city streets will be filled with 24,000 electric and hybrid vehicles by 2012. This will include 2,500 taxis, 4,000 electric and hybrid buses. although using electric taxis is more expensive than conventional taxis the government will be subsidized its running costs upon its introduction.
The Central Government chose Shenzhen as one of the five cities to pilot the program of promoting hybrid and electric vehicles, and the government will give out subsidies to buyers of electric and hybrid vehicles. Shenzhen was also giving out additional subsidies to the buyers in addition to the subsidies given by the government.
