South African team defend their title in the recently concluded China Cup
Last year’s China Cup winner South African team Sheraton, successfully defended their title after three days of intense sailing in Shenzhen. The sailing team was awarded with the Fourth China Cup International Regatta Championship during a closing ceremony at the Kingkey Palace Hotel.
Led by former “Shosholoza” America’s Cup helmsman Mark Sadler, Sheraton maintained their perfect scoreline on Monday on Shenzhen’s Daya Bay, off the Longcheer YC. Impeccable as their execution may have been, with consistent sailing and strong tactics. This year’s team was joined by two new crew members that were previously involved in the South African America Cup Challenge, namely Guido Verhovert and Trevor Spilhaus.
The Sheraton team sailed steadily and conservatively to ensure its scoreline remained unblemished while the Auckland crew on Team Yachtfinders Global and China Boating battled it out for second with the Kiwis coming out on top and the Chinese ultimately being pipped for overall third. The South African team also won first place in the Beneteau 40.7 One Design Division.
