World Expo ended with a record of 73 million visitors
The Shanghai World Expo ended yesterday with 73 million people visiting 246 displays by different countries and international organizations. The six month long culture and technology extravaganza made the Expo China’s biggest tourism event.
The event attracted local visitors, who patiently waited ten hours at some popular national pavilions in hot summer temperatures and long walks. Few Chinese people have the opportunity to travel abroad, the Expo showed them firsthand what the world was. The Expo featured World expositions that started with the London Great Exhibition of 185, marking the coming of the Industrial Revolution which is often been the subject for introducing new technology, food and innovative ideas.
Better City, Better Life was the motto with the city trying to make the Expo a green one. Organizers deployed electric buses and carts, installed energy saving air conditioning and water filters cutting down the usage of bottled water. The Expo also recycled rain water with the help of solar power.
The next Expo will be held in South Korea in 2012 with the theme of Green Growth, Blue Economy or a marine based sustainability. The 2015 Expo will be held in Milan, Italy that will focus on food safety.
