Rampant use of illegal taxis found on Shenzhen streets
Traffic police and transport authorities confiscated around 300 electric bicycles that are being used as illegal taxis, on it first day on a month long campaign to curb the use if illegal taxis. The campaign will focus on illegal taxis found around schools, supermarkets, hospitals and factories.
Transport commission will also target unlicensed passenger and freight services ,while the traffic police will focus operations on unlicensed use of electric bicycles. 25 teams on each task force was assembled and authorize to confiscate any vehicles or bikes that are used as illegal taxis. The task force will be conducting daily inspections twice from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. the huge number of illegal taxis have affected the business of licensed taxis in four major districts and cabs drivers have already staged a strike to express their dissatisfaction on the illegal taxis services.
Traffic police estimated around 600,000 electric bicycles are used as illegal taxis on Shenzhen streets, and majority of the accidents that are happening are caused by the use of these illegal electric bikes taxis. Records have shown that 105 people were killed and 557 were injured in electric bicycles accidents. Most of the bikes involved in the accidents have either no license plates or have no insurance.
Police are now drafting regulations to impose controls on electric vehicles and will impose detailed regulations on electric bicycle offenses.
