Low cost testing services for patients with blood disorder
A charity project was launched that will provide low cost testing services to patients suffering with the blood disorder thalassemia. The thalassemia aid project is organized by the Beijing Genomics Institute and the China Red Cross Society in Shenzhen to help patients with the disease, mostly compromised of children coming from poor families.
Thalessemia is an inherited autosomal recessive blood disease. The disease is a genetic defect, which could be either mutation or deletion, results in reduced rate of synthesis or no synthesis of one of the globin chains that make up hemoglobin. This can cause the formation of abnormal hemoglobin molecules, causing anemia, the characteristic presenting symptom of the thalassemia.
Cards will be distributed to the first group of patients that will be receiving the aid, they will get a typing test that will help in finding a suitable donor for bone marrow transplants for half the cost. After the first batch of patients receiving the cards other patients can register for cards with China Red Cross Society in Shenzhen.
