Global Citizenship and Service Learning
SIS has had a Community Service School Improvement Team for several years. Each year the team sets specific goals for the year. This year, much of the focus is on service learning while continuing to provide various opportunities for SIS students and teachers to serve the greater community. Through service learning, student reflection and the deliberate connection of service opportunities to the curriculum increase students’ awareness and understanding of our role in the local and global community.
Many service activities are happening including the recent Grade 8 Week without Walls. Thanksgiving Weekend, HS students helped at a nearby community center for the children of migrant workers. Over the November holiday, SIS teachers traveled to a town in Guizhou where SIS has maintained a long term service relationship to learn about a project there to convert bio-waste to cooking and lighting gas. And on Saturday, the whole community will be able to participate in a charity run followed by the Winter Bazaar fund raising event.
We hope that these experiences succeed in their service goals and at the same time will help students develop the characteristics that are indicators of real global citizenship like:
● Fostering compassion for fellow citizens
● Enhancing cultural understanding and contributing to the local community
● Developing awareness and a sense of responsibility to the global community
