Opening ceremony venue for the Universiade games to be changed
No official confirmation of a reported venue change for the opening ceremony of the 2011 Universiade Games. According to a report, Shenzhen is planning to hold the opening ceremony at the Shenzhen Bay Sports Center rather than the Universiade Stadium in Longgang District.
Director of the Games Executive office of the opening and closing ceremonies department, refused to comment, he said that preparations for the ceremonies have been going smoothly and official announcements will be made if ever there will be a change of venue. The idea of changing the venue was due to the spectacular opening and closing ceremonies of the Asian Games in Guangzhou, that was held in central Guangzhou new urban area which features a innovative way of using water elements.
The location of the Asian Games helped in showcasing the city of Guangzhou to the world, in which Shenzhen wants to replicate. The venue in the Longgang District is surrounded with undeveloped land and the Shenzhen Bay Sports Center is in the developed Nanshan District which connects to Hong Kong by a cross-sea bridge.
The Shenzhen Bay Sports Center have been dubbed the Spring Cocoon, having a stadium, gymnasium, s swimming pool and theme park and other sports facilities. A 100 meter wide opening in the stadium will give the sports spectators sea view. Originally planned to be used for the venue for the closing ceremony. The closing and opening ceremonies was required to cancel the existing plan and draft a new one for the opening ceremony at the sports center. If there will be changes around 10,000 athletes from around the world are staying in the athletes village in Longgang needs to be transported to Nanshan for the opening ceremony.
