High School Students Volunteer at Migrant Children’s Learning Center
The Migrant Children Learning Center is located in Pengcheng, Dapeng and has been in operation since April, 2010. The center was established to serve the needs of children whose parents have come to Guangdong from elsewhere in China in order to find jobs in local factories. As the children are far away from their extended families and their parents work long hours, they have no one to take care of them after school. The center employs teachers and volunteers who offer after school and weekend courses, homework help, counseling, and even a choir.
This is the first time that the Center has received a visit from an international school.
SIS students in our service learning and IB CAS programs recently spent a Saturday at the Center, where they worked in the morning to clean and repaint the center’s library. Students experienced hands-on just how difficult it is to paint a ceiling, the satisfaction of completing a task, and the camaraderie that comes with a day’s hard work in good company.
But that’s not all. In the afternoon, they played various games and interacted with the children from the center, practicing their mandarin and learning a little more about the lives of these amazing kids.
Nilufar Abdulkhaeva, Grade 12, had this to say about her experience: “I enjoyed playing with the kids and practicing my Chinese with them. I am proud, too, to think that when the children walk into that refurbished library, they will remember us and the day we spent with them.”
We look forward to cooperating with the Migrant Children’s Learning Center again in the future. You can learn more about the organization at www.ciwei.org.
