Record number of vehicles hit Shenzhen roads
The number of registered vehicles in Shenzhen reached the 1.7 million mark, an increase of around 200,000 vehicles since April of this year. plus if vehicles registered outside the city is included the number of vehicles in Shenzhen road will exceed 2 million. This numbers signifies the deteriorating traffic situation, pollution and parking difficulties in the city.
Shenzhen vehicle density is the highest among the major Chinese cities with almost 900 vehicles per square kilometer. If strict measures are not taken, the number of vehicles will reach city limit of 2 million by the year 2012. And in five years the number of vehicles can double if growth rate is maintained at 20 percent a year. in the first half of 2010 the average vehicle registrations were at 21,000 a month but rose to 24,000 a month in the second half of 2010. If measures were not taken to curb the number of vehicles, Shenzhen will become gridlocked in two to three years.
In contrast to the number of vehicles, there are only 700,000 parking spaces available and in five years there will be a parking shortage of 1 million.
