Man sentenced to three years for pulling the plug
A man was sentenced to a three year suspended sentence, when he let his wife die by pulling the plug of a life support machine that was keeping his comatose wife alive. Wen Yuzhang was found guilty of ending his wife’s life Hu Jing by taking her off the life support machine while she was in a coma.
Wen’s family accepted the court’s decision, which the court decided was to Hu satisfaction. Wen will pay 1.28 million yuan compensation to Hu’s mother Xiao Guilian, still Xiao said all the compensation couldn’t bring back her daughter. In February 2, 2009 Hu collapsed at home and was rushed to the hospital and in seven days doctors decided to insert a breathing tube to keep her alive. Wen went to see Hu in the hospital and learned that her condition was not improving, Wen decided to unplugged her life support. He also prevented the doctors and nurses from trying to resuscitate the patient.
Wen was arrested and charged with homicide on February 18, 2009. Wen said he didn’t want to see his wife suffer, and what he did was out of love for her and respect for her wish to get further treatment. This case is a debated topic in China on the topic of euthanasia, in which the people have opinions on mercy killings.
