Shenzhen to be a model city for water conservationShenzhen hopes that the outcome of the national assessment will make them the first city in the Guangdong Province to be a national model for water conservation. A national assessment teams was assembled by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Rural Development.

The National Development and Reform Commission also helped in conducting an inspection of the city taking a closer look on their efforts on conserving water. The assessment team read reports on how the government saves water, the team also visited factories and residential communities during their two day inspection. Shenzhen was one of the cities facing water shortage, and the city began a campaign in 2004 implementing measures in improving all round water conservation.

Water conservation have become an important index in making investment projects, before being approved by the city water resources bureau. The water consumption last year was 21.89 cubic meters one of the lowest in the country. 80 percent of sewage was treated every year and 90 percent of residents are already aware of water conservation according to reports made by the water resources bureau.
