Sweet Emotions

Sweet EmotionsThis year’s Juniors are well on their way through the IB program.  Along with other shared experiences like CAS and the Extended Essay, all students take Theory of Knowledge or TOK as it is lovingly referred.

At first glance, many think the course is about philosophy, and in many ways, it is.  However, it is more aptly described as a course where students begin to think about themselves, who they are as knowers and what exactly it means when they or someone else claims to know something.

As part of this process, students begin to look at the ways in which we come to know, specifically in their IB courses, through Sense Perception, Language, Reason and Emotion.  To help drive this point home, teachers of IB courses were invited to participate in a fishbowl discussion about the role Emotion played in their subject area.

Teachers gathered in the center of the room and began to discuss and contemplate the very issues the students had been grappling with over the previous weeks.  A ‘hot seat’ placed at the table allowed students to jump in and out of the conversation, posing questions and adding their own expertise to the discussion.

The experience had students riveted and engaged; many expressed a sense of privilege to see their teachers in action—watching them ease into a conversation, connecting to large concepts and ideas, and applying their expertise to an area of knowledge.  They were fascinated by the ideas Ms. Lynch expressed about Math, what Mr. McElroy and Mr. Serio had to say about Biology, what Ms. Cho explained about language and literature, what Mrs. Robins posed about History, what Mrs. Curtis added about Art and what Dr. G and Mrs. G had to contribute about Music. And those are just a few of the amazing teachers who helped contribute to that day.

Often the power in learning comes not in what we manage to accomplish on our own, in our classroom, but the major leaps and bounds we are able to make when we all come together.
