Universiade games still lack volunteers

Universiade games still lack volunteersThe Universiade games is experiencing a shortage of volunteers speaking minor languages like Arabic and Spanish, since the games is expected to have athletes from 100 countries. Due to the shortage of volunteers, the Universiade Volunteer departments is recruiting volunteers from Hong Kong were there are a concentration of universities.

Still the volunteer department find it hard to meet the strong demand during the games, even if Hong Kong can provide the 1,000 multilingual volunteers. Authorities are planning to recruit 350 students from 35 universities scattered throughout the country. The department also accepted applications from people who can speak the minor languages. Volunteers were usually the main force in major sports events, and university students were not the dominant group in Shenzhen because of the small number of Universities found in  the city.

Universities are already training volunteers, and the volunteer department is planning to recruit 20,000 more for the sport venues, 250,000 city volunteers and a million social volunteers. So far 70,000 volunteers have applied for the different spots. City volunteers will provide information in public places, like train stations and tourists spots. Social volunteers will promote Universiade culture and assist in the maintenance of social order in its residential communities.

Volunteers will be working three shifts everyday at 750 volunteer service centers found throughout the city. The volunteer service centers will be completed by June next year.

  1. I am a native English female aged 31 living in Nanshan. I would like to learn more about the opportunities available to be part of the volunteer programme for the 2011 Universiade Games. I live opposite the Kempinski Hotel should be location form part of the criteria for selection. It is quite something watching the stadium take shape day by day from by apartment balcony. Kind Regards. Jo.
