Metro company considers offering discounted fares to residents
With the recent opening Metro lines, the company is now considering to offer discounted fares in their off peak hours or monthly cards to help reduce costs for commuters traveling. But no plans were released yet according to the city head of railway transport and construction office.
Metro companies are authorize to set their own fares as long as it doesn’t exceed the limit set by the government. the new fare was released last week with the initial price of 2 yuan for the first four kilometers, then passengers will pay and additional 1 yuan per four kilometer section from the 4 to 12 kilometers then another 1 yuan for every 6 kilometers from 12 to 24 kilometers. The distance of 24 kilometers will also add 1 yuan for every 8 kilometers traveled.
Fares calculation is reasonable since distances between stations vary, not like those on Metro line 1 which is evenly distributed. Is not fair for commuters to pay the same fare for different distances covered. Disabled people, retired or active military personnel, elderly above the 65 of age, and children below 6 years of age or below 1.2 meters can ride for free. Children 1.2 to 1.5 meters and aged between 6 to 14 years are charged with half price of the fare.
The transport commission also asks for public to understand that since most of the land in the newly opened first phase of Line 2 is being develop, buses connecting the metro stations are limited so residents are advise to stagger their travel time.
