Live at the Bayside Auditorium
Rockfest II offered a packed house of SIS listeners and a chance to rock out, as seven bands took to the stage for a night of ear-piercing, energetic music. In styles ranging from heavy metal to hip-hop, SIS students growled their way through a set list that included everything from a metalized cover of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance”, original compositions, to Korean rap. Six student bands performed, preceded by a three song warm-up set by local rockers “Bolt Action”.
Students had to audition in order to earn their spot on stage and vie for the winning prize of 1,000 RMB. Performers were awarded points for stage presence, preparation, originality, and audience response. Our judges this year included Mr. McElroy, Mr. Galvez, and Bolt Action members Ace Disgrace and Leon Clarke. The judges offered valuable and pointed feedback to all bands throughout the evening. In the end, first prize went to The Mongrels, whose members are Ciaran Harris Brunno Soares, Thomas Laas, and Yu Xiang Wang. Fronted by the impishly charismatic Harris, the band whirled through a set that featured the Arctic Monkeys’ “Scumbag” (When the Sun Goes Down), “All the Things I’ve Done”, by the Killers, and the Kings of Leon hit, “Charmer”.
RockFest II (this is our second annual) was organized by the HS Student Council (STUCO). STUCO members wrote the performance standards and guidelines, designed t-shirts, banners, and posters, raised money, organized chaperones and judges, and produced the entire event themselves. Thanks to all the folks who made it possible, especially Mr. MacDonald for his expertise in the sound booth.
