Bicycle enthusiasts marked opening of greenway network in Shenzhen
About a hundred people were invited to go on a cycling trip on the newly built greenway that connect Meilin in Futian district and Xili in Nanshan district. This marks the formal opening of the 335 kilometer greenway network in Shenzhen.
Greenways are open spaces set aside for conservation, recreation and cycling, and often follows natural features such as ridge lines, or river valleys with canals, abandoned rail lines or roadways. Each greenway is unique, and majority of greenways are networks of open natural spaces that connects neighborhoods, parks, and schools to areas natural, recreational and scenic significance. Greenways link people to nature to the enjoyment and enrichment of the community.
The chilly weather was overshadowed with the excitement of riding bicycles in the greenway. Residents were excited to go on hiking and cycling in the greenway for fresh air and exercise. One resident even invited family members to join him in experiencing the greenway. Most of the greenways in Shenzhen were built into the natural landscape and costs around 110 million yuan. Environmentally friendly facilities were installed including solar and wind power street lamps, dustbins and benches made out of recycled materials.
Some were concern about the issues such as security, food and water, and medical assistance on the greenways. The Municipal urban management bureau will be inviting enterprises to bid for rights to manage the greenways. Suggestions were made to provide small electric cars to patrol the greenways to provide water and medical assistance. Emergency call phones and bicycles rentals will soon be available.
The 335 kilometer greenway is a part of the provincial greenway network by the Pearl River Delta, and Shenzhen is planning to construct more greenways that will connect residential communities to the greenway by the end of this year.
