Resident became the 100th person to donate blood for stem cell patient
Sheng Daoshun became the 100th blood donor in Shenzhen who donated blood for stem cells for a leukemia patient in Guangzhou, which was promptly sent to Guangzhou for immediate transplantation. Sheng donated blood 77 times in Shenzhen and 15 times on different occasions in different parts of the country over the span of eight years, making him one of the leading donors in Shenzhen.
Sheng made the decision of donating stem cells when he heard that stem cells transplants can help patients suffering from leukemia and thalassemia. He heard that donating won’t harm his health and he can save many lives of incurable patients. Sheng is the 155th donor in Guandong and the 1,984th donor in China. Another Shenzhener was the 101th stem cell donor and was recovering in the same ward as Sheng, and doctors will collect stem cell from him for a leukemia patient in the Shandong province.
Shenzhen has the highest number of stem cell donors in the country, with two thirds of donors living in the province. a manager living in Shenzhen was the first stem cell donor 2001 when he participated in the China Marrow Donor Program. 1.28 million people living in China are registered in the China Marrow Donor Program. The city blood center have more than 26,000 people willing to donate blood for stem cell patients in the span of ten years, with some donations even reaching patients living in the United States, South Korea and Singapore.
