New notification measures in releasing nuclear plant incidents
The Nuclear Power Plant in Shenzhen Daya Bay was ordered to release information on incidents that include minor leaks in a more disciplined manner. The order came when heated discussions in happened in Hong Kong triggered by delayed reports on information on the two minor leaks that happened.
Two minor radiation leaks that happened in the plant last year have no effect on the environment, nearby residents and plant staff. Delay in informing the public lead to sharp criticism and concern in Hong Kong. The plant is located in Dapeng Peninsula just 52 kilometers form Tsin Sha Tsui in Hong Kong. The new notification mechanism states that Daya Bay Nuclear Power Operations and Management must notify first the Hong Kong Nuclear Investment Co. of non urgent incidents. A summary and initial assessment on the impact on the public safety and environment must be included.
In emergency cases, the plant will immediately inform the nuclear accident prevention and emergency response office, and Hong Kong government must be updated on the incident every six hours.
