Cities in China experiencing severe drought
Some cities in southern and eastern China are starting to run low on drinking water, due to a severe drought around 2 million people will be short on their drinking water supply. Rainfall was down to 90 percent compared to last year in certain provinces as one government official said.
Shortage of water is also felt in the major growing regions of winter wheat. The relentless drought started to dry out the crop producing area such as Shandong and Henan provinces. The drought will continue to affect 4 million hectares more of cropland. Cities around Yellow, Huaihe and Haihe rivers are starting to experience water supply shortage, and people are start to call for relief efforts.
The government should recognize the problems and start a drought relief program. The drought have already affected winter wheat crops in China’s wheat growing areas and is expected to continue until spring. Other parts of the country have been experiencing strong rains and heavy snow.
