Technologies in Action

Technology in ActionLights Camera Action!

Fourth and fifth grade students are involved in a month long unit working with the software program Windows Movie Maker.  The unit began with the students learning about the techniques used to make movies.  Students watched the dancing roll scene from the 1925 movie the Gold Rush with Charlie Chaplin. Students then made comparisons with a remake of this same scene by actor Johnny Depp done 70 years later. Emphasis for the clips was put on observing wide angle shots and close-up camera work.  Students then watched a short movie made by “Chef” Barbar on Making Home Made Pasta. During the next few weeks the students will be involved in making a movie on the Botanical Gardens in  Singapore.  In a culminating activity the fourth grade students will make a short movie to go along with their migration unit and the fifth grade will develop a movie from the Reader’s Theatre.

Third Graders Explore Space

Third grade students are working on a January unit on collecting information about the Earth, Moon and Sun.  Three websites were used to research these topics.  Students gathered information about the rotation, size, surface temperature and age of each.

The information was collected on a table in Word at:  http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/astronomy/sun/sunsize.shtml

Second Graders Show Their “Wild Side”

Second graders have been busy building Their Wild Self. This fun website comes from the New York Zoo & Aquarium.  Students spent time exploring the different options to building their Wild Side and then printed out a copy.  Students then used Microsoft Word to write a description of their Wild Side.

You can explore this fun website with your child at: http://www.buildyourwildself.com/

Celebrations!

First Grade students are searching celebrations around the world.  This activity is in conjunction with their classroom study of celebrations. Students are  learning Internet safety while looking for celebration images to download to Microsoft Word. Students in first grade are also working on learning to type in Dance Mat Typing.

You can also work with your child on this website: at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/

Kindergarten Wonderland

Kindergarten students are creating a Winter Wonderland in Kid Pixs.  Students are using all of the shapes and paint pallets they have learned so far this year.  Students have also been enjoying the stories found at the BBC Little Animals Activity Center.
