Guangzhou to control use of government vehicles
Guangdong Governor Huang Huahua said they will not be restricting vehicle registrations in the newly discussed measures in efforts to conteol traffic congestion. Huahua said they will not copy Beijing’s practice of restricting vehicle registration, since part of their campaign is to allow more residents to own vehicles. This move is part of the Guangdong’s provincial government campaign to build a happy province by allowing residents to own private cars.
Residents are happy when they buy their own cars he said. Owning a car indicates the family becoming rich. How ever Guangzhou will reform and overhaul the use of official cars in the effort to alleviate traffic jams. The reform will only allow vice governors, Party and government officials above level exclusive use of official cars. As of now officials at township level or lower have access to use the official cars, now they will no longer have use of the official cars when the new measure is approved.
The end of 2010 Guangzhou traffic department showed that Guangzhou have 2.15 million registered vehicles.
