ECLC1A “The Rabbits” Family/House Project and Learning Experiences

ECLC1A “The Rabbits” Family/House Project and Learning ExperiencesWe all know that many young children at the beginning of the year express anxiety and have difficulty adjusting to a new school environment and making friends. To help them manage this anxiety, we invited the children to make illustrations of their family members. “This is mommy, daddy, and me!” they described time and time again. For weeks this was what the “Rabbits” were interested in doing and this Provocation soon  became  our first Project  for the year. This Family Project however, extended beyond our expectations.

As the “Rabbits” continued their exploration of  Family Project, they began building wooden block houses for their families and drawing their constructions. This interest grew  and we responded by inviting one of the school carpenters to show the “Rabbits” how things are built and fixed. Ms. Eleni  introduced the different   uses of  our new carpentry  bench and explained some safety rules. The children’s interest continued during Phase 2 of our   Project. We then decided to arrange some local field trips around Jingshan. With the  cooperation and support from our families, we conducted a few home visits to make our learning more meaningful, interesting, and fun. In addition, these home visits  gave the  students the opportunity to compare houses and learn about each other’s culture, interests, home life etc. and it became a great motivation in establishing friendships.

It was interesting to observe   that after the home visits  some of the “Rabbits” wanted to return to their new friends houses again. In the 3rd phase of our Project a culminating activity usually follows. The “Rabbits” performed  the story of the 3 little pigs. They had to  learn their lines in English, sing along and then  showcase their 3D house models to  their parents. This required courage, confidence and memory skills. The performance was  a great success and much appreciated by the parents.

Now the “Rabbits” have moved on showing interest in  flowers, plants, and transportation. I wonder which one of the their interests will “shine” to be our next project? We will set up Provocations and observe  as we prepare to go on another learning journey with our 3-4 year olds.
