Residents to expect increased food prices before Spring FestivalWith cold weather, increasing costs, and the approaching Spring Festival holiday food prices is expected to rise. Prices have increased by almost 50 percent in the farm produce markets.

In the Buji Farm Produce Wholesale Market prices for different leafy vegetables is about 2.95 yuan per 500 grams higher than last month, cabbage is now at 2.98 yuan for 500 grams, and spinach is 4.18 yuan per 500 grams. Organic vegetables are more expensive with chives priced at 27 yuan per 500 grams. Other vegetables such as potatoes, garlic, cucumber and tomatoes increased their prices to 30 percent.

3,300 tons of vegetables are sold in Shenzhen everyday and price hikes were blamed to the increase in transport and labor costs, decrease in supplies because of the cold weather are also reasons for the price hikes. Edible oil price also increased 10 percent because of increases in the raw materials prices. Central Government said that the price for edible oil will not increase quickly because of the price control they imposed.

Eggs and frozen chicken also felt an increase of 4 percent, but sales are low since last month when factories and companies closed their dining areas because majority of their workers went home early to celebrate the Spring Festival. prices for fruit also increased were imported fruit are now 30 percent higher that its previous price.
