Key members of crime group on trial
Mai Shuijin and Mai Zhiyuan and twenty two other members of a organized crime group is on trial at the Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court. They defendants are accused of gambling, extortion, illegal possession of firearms and using violence in doing business.
The group have been active around the Jiangshi and Tangwei Villages operating gambling dens, causing injuries and bribing police for protection, this was going on since 2000. Mai Zhiyuan denied the charges his was accused of. Mai admitted operating a gambling den in 2007 but it closed down after a few months of operation. He also said that he doesn’t even know the other suspects accused of the crimes.
Court record showed that the Mai a native of Jiangshi Village have been sentenced for extortion by the Bao’an District People’s Court in 2004 and 2008. Prosecutors also accused the key members of the crime group of giving at least 13,000 yuan in bribes to policemen to protect a gambling den located in the Gongming New Zone.
