Take Me Out to the Ballgame, Take Me Out to the Crowd…

Take Me Out to the Ballgame, Take Me Out to the Crowd…A crowd of twenty third, fourth and fifth graders have been heading to their “Field of Dreams” up on the football pitch every Friday afternoon this trimester to improve their softball skills, exercise, learn about teamwork, and have a whole bunch of fun.  Each session begins with stretching to avoid injuries and a few laps around the track for conditioning.  Even though it’s not their favorite part of this ASA, they know the importance of these elements in any sport.  Sometimes, it’s even worth a few laughs for all of us!

When I asked the students why they chose softball over all of the other ASA’s, Si Woo said, “It’s a lot like baseball, and I love baseball.”  Sydney said, “I chose it because my dad plays softball.”  “I like to be outside in the fresh air and get exercise,” Natalie commented.  Most others agreed with Natalie.  They all wanted to get outside, run and play after working so hard in school all day.  Frankly, I totally agree with them!

During our early sessions, we spent some time learning how to put on a mitt, how to throw the ball and not the bat, how to run the bases, how to hit a ball off a tee, and the positions.  Each week, the players are getting better both in their skills and  understanding the game.

Above all, they love it when we yell, “Play Ball!” and have the games.  “I like to hit the ball and run,” Martin declared.  “I like it all, hitting, running, fielding and throwing,” Braden added.  Andy loves to throw, “…because I have a pretty strong arm.  I played softball last year.”

With three sessions left, there’s bound to be more close plays, many laughs,  and a whole lot more fun!  If you have some time on Fridays, come out and cheer them on.
