Travelers rushing home after the holidays
3.9 million travelers crossed between Shenzhen and Hong Kong during the Spring Festival. there were 2.5 million outbound travelers crossing city checkpoints with a majority of the travelers are city residents holding multiple entry Hong Kong visas and others are coming from the mainland.
There was an increase of tour groups coming feom the mainland and a couple were individual tourists, their first stop was Shenzhen then proceeded to Hong Kong after spending a few days in Shenzhen boosting holiday tourism. Also due to cheaper living costs a number of Hong Kong residents decided to spend their holiday in Shenzhen and other mainland cities.
Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint the newest checkpoint in Shenzhen had a record of 108,788 border crossings last Sunday, 60 percent are returning from Hong Kong. Tourist coming from the mainland where rushing to Hong Kong also contributed to the number of checkpoint crossings. The checkpoint was used rarely by people and last Sunday it opened a record 14 hours and processed a heavy flow of cross border travelers.
A sharp increase in cross border travelers during the night with almost 100,000 people crossing the border between midnight to 6:30 am through the 24 hour checkpoint in Huanggang Checkpoint.
