Senior citizens to start getting allowances
20,000 senior citizens over the age of 80, will be receiving allowances every month. Shenzhen Civil Affairs Bureau said the allowances is between 200 to 500 yuan. seniors between the ages of 80 to 89 will get 200 yuan, 300 yuan for seniors aged 90 to 99 and 500 yuan to centenarians.
The allowances will be deposited directly to their respective banks accounts, and all beneficiaries are required to be holders of a Shenzhen hukou or permanent resident permits. The allowance is among the highest given for seniors in any Chinese mainland cities. Some cities are also following suit and now establishing allowance mechanisms for their senior citizens. Eligible seniors can apply at the nearest community work centers. The population of elderly people with Shenzhen hukou amounts to 12 percent of the total elderly population in Shenzhen and is expected to rise to 4 percent in the coming five years. The allowances will cost the city around 53 million yuan a year.
