Shenzhen University to be financially independent
The Chinese University of Hong Kong Shenzhen campus will finally have academic freedom and be financially independent from its Hong Kong campus located in Sha Tin. The Shenzhen campus is located in Longgang district and will be admitting 6,000 students of the expected 7,000 students in 2013.
Subject offered in both campuses may be different, since the Shenzhen curriculum still needs approval from the Senate in the Sha Tin campus. The Shenzhen campus will be financially independent and no fund from the Hong Kong school will be sent to subsidize the campus operations. The Shenzhen campus will ensures the standard of it campus, making sure is within par or even better than the Sha Tin institution. The campus are now planning cooperation with Shenzhen government and its education officials.
The campus vice chancellor in charge of the project is still to decide on what disciplines to offer. Designing the disciplines the vice chancellor plans to take account things such as strength of the university, the type of talent needed for the Pearl River Delta and development trends that are happening in China and around Asia in the next 20 to 30 years. The tuition fees for the Shenzhen campus is said to be at HK$100,000 a year.
