The importance of a proper recess!
Best practices and current research all support recess time as a time for students to have free play! This means that, unlike athletic teams/clubs or in-school PE classes, recess should be a time for students to engage in unstructured play!
According to the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, unstructured play time (as distinct from PE or other structured physical activity programs) “allows elementary children to practice life skills such as conflict resolution, cooperation, respect for rules, taking turns, sharing, using language to communicate, and problem solving in real situations that are real. Furthermore, it may facilitate improved attention and focus on learning in the academic program.”
Kids: get out there and play! Play games you know or make up brand new ones! Remember to be safe and respectful, and enjoy YOUR time to play and learn!
Parents: encourage your kids to play games of their own design. This will benefit their brains and their bodies now and for a lifetime!
