Hospital invites foreigners to be language volunteers
Shekou People’s Hospital established a volunteers database that lists volunteers who can speak 70 languages for foreigners that are seeking medical treatment at the hospital. This database of interpreters is the first that anyone could find in public hospitals in Shenzhen.
The database was built with the standard of the Joints Commission International and for far 30 foreigners have already sign up to be volunteers listed on the database. Some volunteers were even recruited as they went to the hospital for check ups or treatment.
As volunteers come in for treatment, they were often ask what language the speak and if they are interested in volunteering as interpreters for the hospital. The database have listed languages in English, German, French, Italian and Dutch. The database also have uncommon languages such as Polish and Icelandic.
Most of the volunteers were airline pilots of executives of foreign companies based in Shekou. Most foreigners live in Shenzhen for two or three years so the database usually list two or three volunteers in every language. 30,000 foreigners are living in Shenzhen permanently and the hospital treats around 3,000 foreigners a year with some foreigners coming in from neighboring cities.
