Incinerator to be transfered to a new location
Hong Kong government decided to abandon their plans to build a garbage incinerator, four miles across the bay from Shekou. Residents of Shekou gladly accepted the decision. Hong Kong officials selected Shek Kwu Chan a remote outlaying island six kilometers south of Lantau.
The incinerator was to be placed in Tsng Tsui in Tuen Mun, but it cause wide public concern on the pollution it will cause in Shekou and Tuen Mun as well. people were worried that the smoke emitting from the incinerator will further aggravate air pollution and poses a health risk in its residents.
An environmental protection group in Nanshan District rallied in the streets when they found out that the plans of building a incinerator in Tuen Mun. The group were happy after they find out of the new relocation plans for the incinerator. Pollutants and carcinogens are to affect Nantou Peninsula where Shekou is located id the incinerator plans was to push through. The selection process for the incinerator was ever since controversial since potential sites are shortlisted. Concerns also heighten when palns to expand Tseung Kwan landfill was rejected.
Residents in Shekou and Nantou Peninsula will be happy to hear the news of the relocation of the incinerator to a different area.
