Shenzhen Dragons 13 Guangzhou Rams 27
The Guangzhou Rams came to town on Saturday 19th February for the first rugby fixture in SZ of 2011. Both teams were missing key players but that didn’t stop the spectators witnessing some fantastic play from both sides.
The Dragons were leading for large parts of the game but the Rams superior fitness told in the end with a couple of late tries sealing a hard earned victory.
Morale was high between both teams and the game was played in a great spirit and the shenanigans that followed summed up rugby in Asia, two teams spending 80 minutes smashing lumps put of each other and then all drinking and partying together afterwards.
Mentions have to go to Ian Ticehurst for Shenzhen, winning the man of the match award and showing that the personal training sessions with Iron gym trainer Josh Phillips have really been paying dividends.
New French fly half Theo also put in a fantastic performance with great tactical nous and a fantastic kicking game.
I could go through the whole team and give mentions to everybody as the guys all put their bodies on the line and did the Dragons proud.
Next week the Dragons go to Guangzhou for the Australasian cup. The setting is the Asian games stadium and should be a memorable weekend of rugby with teams coming from as far a field as Australia.
Well done Dragons and Rams and good luck next week.
