MS E-Club in Action

MS E-Club in ActionThe Environmental Club (E-Club) is an enthusiastic group of grade 6, 7, and 8 students.  We began the year as a small, but mighty, bunch and with new members nearly every week, our club just keeps getting stronger and stronger.

This year our focus has been on energy.  We spent the first semester doing research about water conservation.  In an attempt to understand the causes of drought, its effects on a community, and more specifically its influence on young people, we conducted research to learn more about drought-stricken areas in our own community, China.  The grave consequences became very real to us.  We were impelled to discuss, research, and promote simple ways that we, as individuals, can save water and use it wisely.

Currently, we are continuing our research to learn about ways that we can save trees, water, and energy at home, at school, and in our community.  By April we will be ready to present our research and ideas to the rest of the MS student body.

Simultaneously, we are baking up a storm!  The E-Club has a catering business.  Not only are we learning about very real, very serious concepts, we’re learning a practical skill.  So far we have raised over 1600 RMB for our cause and our list of customers continues to grow.

Our goal is to earn 2800 RMB by June.  This will be put towards building a bio-fuel unit for one household in Guizhou, one of China’s poorest provinces.  This is all it takes to build a system that allows farmers to save 4-5000 RMB on coal or firewood every year.  The bio-fuel unit is a sustainable structure that will make a very significant difference for one family.

Students may not even realize it but the E-Club has warped into a place of genuine inquiry based learning.  Students regularly practice thinking critically, it gives them the opportunity to hone their ability to communicate effectively, and of course the E-Club helps students learn about being a global citizen and making a difference in our immediate community and the world.
