Shenzhen Dragons player breaks leg in four places

Shenzhen Dragons player breaks leg in four places.I headed over to Guangzhou on Saturday to take part in the Australasian Rugby cup. The competition consisted of one team from Australia and four from China battling for the cup.

The rugby was fierce and ferocious and the first aid team were called on several times in the opening games with no fewer than three players ending day one in hospital. I was one of them, after a clash of legs I broke my Fibula in three places and tibia in one place.

I am writing this article from the Guangzhou central college hospital, a hospital built last year for the Asian Games. The hospital staff have been fantastic and really looked after me. I remember hearing the bones snap on the pitch and instantly my pain turned to fears of how I would be taken care of. Well I needn’t have worried for up stept several heroes on the pitch, first aider Andrea gave me a thoroughly professional splint and calmed me down by telling me everything would be OK.

My Dragons team mates were amazing in supporting me and getting me through the time we had to wait for the ambulance.

My biggest hero of the day though was Simon Jenkinson. Simon came to the hospital with me and stayed there all night until my surgery was over. Thank you so much mate.

Stuart the Guangzhou coach also stayed most of the night and has been to visit every day since and Guangzhou player Conor, himself unfortunate to have suffered a hand injury shared a room with me and was a huge help with his amazing Chinese. On top of that I have had wonderful messages of support and lots more visits from Shenzhen and Guangzhou players. X-Pat rugby in China really does bring together the best people in the world.

Cheers everyone.
