Plastic feeding bottles with BPA can cause health problems
Baby bottles made with plastics containing the organic compound Bisphenol A are being sold in supermarkets in the Nanshan district even with claims by the European Union that the compound BPA can cause sexual prematurity.
District supermarkets haven’t receive any official notice to remove any baby bottles made out of polycarbonate (PC) bottles that contains BPA from their shelves. One employee stated that this is the first time she ever heard that PC bottles with BPA can cause problems in children. PC baby bottles are very popular since imported plastic feeding bottles that contains no BPA costs around 100 yuan, while PC bottles only costs 20 to 30 yuan. Parents buying PC bottles often choose ones that are break proof.
Most parents are not aware of the terms PC and BPA, and most of the plastic feeding bottles sold in China are okay since there is a strict limit on BPA content in food packaging imposed by the government. however after repeated high temperature sterilization would age the plastics bottles resulting in more BPA being released. Plastic feeding bottles must be changed frequently and experts even suggest using glass bottles.
On June 1 the European Union will be banning the use of BPA in baby bottles that will be sold in stores.
