Stars Shine at SIS

Stars Shine at SISWhen you spot some students wearing a black T-shirt with shiny yellow stars while walking around Jingshan campus, you might wonder what is special about those unique T-shirts. Well, their wearers are the Star Readers of Jingshan Library.

To motivate  student reading, we are running a new program called Star Readers for elementary school this year. All the elementary school students have to work hard for the Star Reader T-shirt and a certificate. For Grade 1-2 students, they are required to fill in their Star Reader logs by reading 30 books from the library and learn to judge what the reading level by Easy, Just Right and Hard. For Grade 3-5 students, they not only have to complete their Destiny Quest Star Reader log of 15 books, but also post 5 book reviews online.  In the end Mrs.Warrick  verifies their Star Reader logs and inspects their reviews , then they win a Star Reader T-shirt and  a certificate. If your child is already one of the Star Readers, please don’t forget to congratulate them for their great effort in reading, and reflecting on their reading. We are all proud of them! Meanwhile, we would like to thank Mr.&Mrs.Xiao who have sponsored our Star Reading programming by donating those special Star Reader T-shirts to Jingshan library; we truly appreciate their kind support to SIS.

Aligned  with the Star Reader program, Grade 3-5 students are learning how to use Destiny Quest this school year. Destiny Quest is an interactive program created by Follett to allow students to take charge of their library experience. It empowers students to use their language arts, writing skills and hone their Web 2.0 skills. The most exciting  thing about this program is that students have their own Destiny Quest accounts to make many friends among the whole school or the whole world and build their resource lists and reading shelves(Shelf: have read, Shelf: Now reading, Shelf: Want to read). They are able to recommend books to their friends and post their reviews  online, I think it’s a great tool for students to share reading experience and promote reading. All the Grade 3-5 students have to update their Destiny Quest every library circulation time, they are confident to use this online reading tool by now, many students have contributed their reviews on the Destiny Quest which are the valuable opinions for their peer while selecting books. Well done, Grade 3-5 students!

Destiny Quest also showcases the most popular books to the patrons called the Top 10 Books, and the new books which just arrived the library at any time called New Arrival, keeping students informed and interested in their library. At SIS, we pride ourselves in student driven programs, and the Star Reader Program has components built into it that allows students to evaluate resources, their own reading (and writing, for the older students), and then set new goals for themselves.
